Tide and Lake puts the government’s water data for a beach or a lake on one page: the tides for the week and the month, the water temperature, the sun and moon, or the lake level against full pool. The data is public and free; the work is choosing the right station for each place, keeping it current and showing where every number comes from.
What we cover
10 beach towns in 7 states and 10 lakes in Georgia and Missouri, to start. Each page names the station or gauge it uses, how far it is from the place, and when it was last read.
How the pages are made
- Tide predictions come from NOAA, a year at a time, and are drawn into charts and calendars here.
- Water temperatures and lake levels are checked every hour. A reading that stops arriving is hidden after a set time rather than shown as current.
- Sunrise, sunset and moon phases are calculated with standard astronomical formulas.
See data sources for the details and the disclaimer for the limits.
